On a warm and clear August evening, BFER hosted a guided bat walk at Knettishall Heath, in collaboration with the accessible walking charity, Pathmakers.
The walk was led by Lindsey Bilston of the Norfolk and Norwich Bat Group, and participants were treated to consistent sightings of bats including Common, Soprano, and Nathusius Pipistrelles, as well as Noctules. During the walk, participants used bat detectors, electronic devices that pick up the high frequency sound of bat calls. This allowed the group to not only see but hear the bats, assisting them to identify the different species by the frequency of their calls. In addition to bats, the group were also treated with the sound of owl calls, as well as a bright canopy of stars.
Knettishall Heath is a diverse Brecks landscape managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Find out more information HERE
