Pond restoration and conservation

A webinar exploring actionable steps for pond restoration and management.

On Thursday 10th July 2025, the Brecks Fen Edge and Rivers Landscape Partnership Scheme (BFER) hosted an introductory webinar on pond restoration and conservation.

This webinar was presented by Carl Sayer, Professor of Limnology & Freshwater Ecology at the University College London and a co-founder and Director of the Norfolk Ponds Project (NPP). The webinar shared top tips and actionable steps for conservationists, farmers and local people, exploring pond restoration and management (including the resurrection of ghost ponds and ghost pingos). Carl shared his first-hand experiences of the fascinating hidden world of pond conservation.

The talk covered:

  • An introduction to ghost ponds and pingos
  • The benefits to wildlife from restoring ponds
  • Practical insights into the pond restoration process
  • Key considerations and actionable steps for parish councils interested in creating or maintaining ponds in their area

This webinar was developed in collaboration with the Suffolk Association of Local Councils. The Brecks Fen Edge and Rivers Landscape Partnership Scheme (BFER) is made possible with thanks to the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and players of the National Lottery.
