Wednesday 23rd June saw the first of our Watery Wildlife Education events. The project is led by Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust who will work intensively with four key primary schools and surrounding communities in the Brecks Fen Edge and Rivers project area to introduce the staff and children to the wealth of watery wildlife in their local countryside.
This project aims to inspire in-depth learning in young people about the watery wildlife in the Brecks Fen Edge and Rivers area and build the confidence of teachers and group leaders to visit local wildlife sites with young people.
This first event was at NWT Thompson Common on the theme of dragonflies and damselflies – pupils from Caston Primary School took part in pond dipping and practiced their identification skills with what they found. They were also able to create artistic representations of dragonflies with foraged items from the site. You can watch a film of the day here: Caston Primary School Trip
The teachers that came with the group said:
“Thank you so much for such a wonderful day in the common yesterday learning about nature and the pingos. We all had an amazing time. The children absolutely loved it!”
“It fitted in really well with our curriculum. The children were fully engaged. Many children were not aware of the site and will now visit with their families. It was great for the children to be out of the classroom and engaging with nature (away from technology). Thanks for a super visit.”
