Thetford Celebrates EDGE Award for Students

25 further students achieve awards under the EDGE programme

On the 22nd of October, 25 pupils from The Damara School and Thetford Priory celebrated new achievements with the BFER Team, Bush Adventures and Mayor of Thetford, Chris Harvey. This celebration followed all students completing a six-day course on the EDGE programme, created and run by Bush Adventures.

The EDGE course is a heritage focused programme focusing on team building and outdoor education, enabling participants to work on their own wellbeing whilst learning skills such as bushcraft, fire lighting, first aid skills, and the history of local areas. Participants are encouraged to push themselves outside their comfort zone by trying activities such as canoeing, building bird boxes and axe throwing! This course was based at the Nunnery Lakes Reserve of the British Trust of Ornithology so we’re sure there was a bit of birdwatching involved too!

During the course, participants are given the opportunity to achieve the John Muir Award and First Aid Training. This group was an entry level group with varying levels of learning needs and mental health conditions requiring support from additional staff, as such, for many participants, this is the first certificate they will have received outside of school activities.

To celebrate properly, we invited 90 students, teachers and family members, and a representative from About Thetford magazine, to the presentation ceremony. Each child was called to the front, where the Mayor and EDGE programme leads, Max and Sarah presented them with their certificates. The smiles and enthusiastic clapping told the story of their fantastic achievements.

Well done to all!
