Saying Goodnight to BFER – with a Glow

Brilliant Brecks biofluorescence to see us out.

Throughout the last few years, we were privileged to be able to host biofluorescent night walks led by the wonderful, biofluorescence expert, David Atthowe of Reveal Nature. In our final year of delivering the Brecks Fen Edge and Rivers Landscape Partnership, we discovered that David was busy literally writing the book on biofluorescence and would not be able to run any walks for us. Whilst we are very excited to read the book, we were disappointed we wouldn’t be able to hold these events. So, when David contacted us to say he would be available for one month only, we immediately booked him in, even though it was the penultimate week of our project!

Holding our last event under the name BFER felt really sad but what better way to see the project out, than wandering around the forest gazing at glowing plants and creatures?

Biofluorescence is not the generation of light by the subject itself (like a glow worm or firefly) but the reflecting back of light (like a high vis jacket) and it’s all around us! It’s wonderful being able to explore the Brecks with you and discover a side to it we are not adapted to seeing normally. A bit like exploring an alien planet but just down the road from your house.

Thank you to everyone who came on our final BFER walk and to everyone who has come to any of the events we have held in the past 6 years. Here’s to many more under the Brecks Landscape Partnership!

And, in case you’re curious, David’s book should be coming out in early 2027. We know we’ll be pre-ordering our copy, we hope you will too!
