The River Raiders Report

The much anticipated River Raiders report has been released!

River Raiders is a BFER heritage project, which has worked to uncover the history of the Brecks rivers as corridors for movement and trade pre-1066, and  the history and impact of Vikings in the Brecks. The project was delivered by Dr Richard Hoggett, with the support of the Breckland Society and volunteers. Through the project, volunteers and engaged in research and practical field work, drawing on a range of historical resources. The River Raiders Report is a culmination of this work, examining archaeological evidence, artefacts, and place-names. It presents a detailed overview of the history and archaeology of Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods in the Brecks area of East Anglia.

To celebrate the launch of this publication, volunteers from the project were invited to take part in a guided tour of Thetford, led by Dr Richard Hoggett. During the tour, the group explored examples on Viking influence of the landscape (such as street names) and evidence of their presence (including a surviving stretch of a defensive earthwork bank).

The tour, including a map and information, can be found in the River Raiders report.
