Rediscovering Midsummer Rituals

A magical walk in the forest to celebrate midsummer in the Brecks.

Halfway through 2025, we teamed up with forager and forest explorer Jon Tyler to celebrate midsummer with a magical evening walk in Kings Forest.

We explored the history of celebrating midsummer, looking at the plants that famously bloomed at that time, and the plants of the Brecks at this time of year. We talked about how people have marked it throughout the years and then created our own version of a midsummer ritual.

Twelve people joined us to wander the sandy paths of this pine plantation, forage for wild raspberries, watch skipper butterflies on bramble flowers, listen to a cuckoo calling through the trees before starting its migration, and make our own midsummer postcards with plants and seeds.

We sought out an ancient bronze age burial mound hidden in a clearing of pines, where we had a sociable supper and made tea from the raspberries, pine needles and wood sage we had gathered.

We watched the sun set over the trees as we meandered our way home, ready to go into the second half of the year, safe in the knowledge that there is still community, positivity and beauty in the world.

The group stands in dwindling light, watching the sun set over the forest.
