New Jackdaw Route Launched in Blackbourn Valley

The first of three new trails given the Run Breckland treatment as the runners take to the route.

Suffolk County Council’s Rights of Way team have taken on the challenge of improving accessibility to three Brecks rivers in our Accessible Rivers project: the Lark, the Cut-Off Channel at Lakenheath and the Blackbourn. Already, their team and dedicated volunteers have cleared many existing access routes and installed gates, rather than stiles, to improve access but, now they have created a brand-new route. Reports had reached the Rights of Way team, of many people running along the road networks in Honington and Sappiston – presumably because they lacked off-road trails to run. Working closely with the community in the area, a potential new route was cleared, mapped on Strava, and then tested by the local RAF base. As a result, the team borrowed an RAF nickname for the Honington base to christen their new route. Introducing the 7.5km Jackdaw Trail!

In October 2022, Run Breckland and the Rights of Way team held the first official run of the route and were joined by the Duke of Grafton to launch it. Turn-out on the day was great, the weather mild and sunny for October and each runner received a specially designed medal for the event.

As well as the 7.5km trail, a 5km and 10km route are also underway in the area to create a Jackdaw trio. We hope they can be used for countless runs and walks in future.
