Inspiring the Next Generation of Storytellers

Schools around the Brecks are discovering local history through stories then learning how to tell their own.

Once upon a time, on a sunny afternoon in June, Project Officer Tracy had the absolute pleasure of visiting Barnham Cross CEVE Primary School to see a storytelling session in full swing.

After a full school assembly to 168 children about myths, fables and folklore stories, two further classroom sessions were led by Lynn Whitehead, the Suffolk historian and storyteller, whose captivating tales brought local history to life for the children.

Lynn’s unique blend of history and storytelling had the children completely engrossed as she wove tales from Norfolk and Suffolk’s past. But it wasn’t just about listening – Lynn encouraged the children to become storytellers themselves. With her guidance, they began crafting their own stories, drawing inspiration from the history they had just heard.

Tracy was thrilled to see how engaged and enthusiastic the children from year 3 and year 4 (Badger and Fox class) were –  listening intently, asking questions, and brimming with ideas. The visit showcased the power of storytelling not only to educate, but to ignite creativity and a deeper connection with local heritage.

A number of schools are taking part in this series of storytelling sessions as well as Barnham Cross Primary to celebrate local heritage: Lakenheath Primary, Forest Academy, and West Row Academy too.

A big thank you to Barnham Cross School for hosting our Project Officer, and to Lynn for her inspiring work with the next generation of storytellers!
