Grant Recipient in Thetford in Bloom Award

Congratulations Admirals Academy!

On Friday 19th July, Thetford Town Council hosted the Awards Ceremony for the 2024 Thetford in Bloom Competition. The BFER-supported Thetford Conservation Group were given Special Recognition at the event, so well done to those tireless volunteers! But the team at BFER were especially thrilled to see Admirals Academy take second place in the Environmental Project Award for their nature garden.

After providing funding for the garden in winter, we have watched the development of the project from a bare, scrubby patch of land, to native tree-planting for the boundary, to the much-loved garden and play-space, filled with flowers, sculptures, natural play objects and a huge bug hotel that it is today.

No-one knows who put the school forward for the Thetford in Bloom award, but the panel of judges that visited all nominated sites were clearly highly impressed by the garden. It is an unexpected but well-deserved reward for the school which has worked so much on improving green spaces and environmental awareness this year.

The garden was designed and created (with the children’s help of course!) by garden designer Mia Witham and she has also partnered with the school for BFER’s Rainwater Planters project – capturing excess run-off to water plants and reduce the flow of rainwater onto hard surfaces and into drains.
