Fruit

Volunteer blogger, Wendy Meek, reflects on the joy of walking in a group.

We walk in a line, sometimes slower, sometimes faster, taking care not to leave anyone behind. We look at the world through collective eyes; wondering at the beauty of an apple tree resplendent with pretty yet bitter fruit.

We see the horses in their fields and the signs warning us not to feed them because it might upset their stomachs. We would like to share a bag of carrots between the quiet, patient donkeys but we do not dare. Sometimes an act of love can cause unintended harm.

We talk about the allotments and how many times a year they are flooded. I wish I could have my own allotment but am painfully aware of my horticultural shortcomings. If only I had the skill to keep a peach tree alive or to grow sweet, edible blackberries.

We wonder where all the bees and butterflies went this year.

We talk of plans to build houses where nature currently resides.

People reminisce on long ago days spent on, and in, the river when they were carefree children and there was no such thing as the internet.

We learn about one another’s hobbies; wood turning, fabric dyeing, jam making, furniture restoration and various artist endeavours. I have just finished painting a watercolour picture of some oranges. It is bright, and sunny, and makes me smile.

New members rejoice at the sight of vibrant green grass and a large weeping willow.

We stroll together, we laugh, we learn, we eat the orchard fruit, and we bathe in the warmth of our small, walking group community.
