Brecks Resilience – Planning for the Future Landscape

The results of the first gathering of the Brecks Landscape Partnership – a project informed and directed by the Brecks community.

On Thursday the 23rd of October 2025, around 75 individuals with involvement in the management of the Brecks gathered at The Athenaeum, Bury St Edmunds to align priorities for the future of the landscape.

Following the success of two previous Landscape Partnerships, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a Resilience Grant of £248,073 to Suffolk County Council for the delivery of an 18-month project (commencing November 2025). Building on over a decade of successful collaboration, this project marks the start of a new, long-term Brecks Landscape Partnership, uniting communities, landowners, conservation bodies, and local authorities in a shared mission to protect and enhance the Brecks.

The Brecks Resilience Conference sees the launch of this new project, designed to increase, inform and involve the existing network of land-managers, conservationists, researchers, policy-makers, council authorities, event leaders, business owners and experts in the area.

The Brecks Landscape Partnership team worked with InPlace Consulting to compile The Brecks Field Guide to Resilience, and we heard an overview of its findings from consultant, Timo Peach. He has also created a series of podcast episodes interviewing 15 different people working in the Brecks on the theme of resilience, which you can find here: A Field Guide to the Brecks.

Through a series of workshops on the day, participants generated ideas and plans to inform the Brecks Landscape Partnership’s marketing strategies and future project plans and direction. The engagement, creativity and enthusiasm of everyone involved was really positive and the results of the workshops have inspired the Brecks LP team in terms of the “big picture” direction to take, and small, day-to-day aims and priorities. We have copious notes and spreadsheets as a result of the workshop feedback but, to give you a flavour, we have created two word clouds below:

The first question we asked was: How can we spread the word about the Brecks?

The second question was: What hasn’t been done already that should be?

It was wonderful to start this project with such a creative and practical group of people and a number of people, from long-term supporters to brand-new contacts, have already put themselves forward to help guide the Partnership over the next 18 months.
