Between the Floods

Aquatic and marginal planting along the river Lark and the hurdles that come with it!

River restoration works can be tricky to manage, with birds nesting, fish spawning, and floods and droughts to avoid. Slowly, piece by piece, RLCP and their volunteers are improving the river Lark with new marginal and aquatic plants.

In April and May 2023, 2 work parties of 6 experienced volunteers installed coir grass features between Co-op and Lark Valley Golf Course. But then flooding meant further work had to be delayed. Then, in September 2023, 100 linear metres of planting was completed!

There was more flooding to contend with at the end of the year, but, at the start of 2024, 3 work parties were able to meet to carry out litter picking and 80 linear metres of aquatic planting despite persistent flood conditions throughout the period. They even recorded signs of otter habitation beside the river, and snapped a picture of otter spraint on the coir rolls stacked beside the river to install the next day!
