What was the Battle of Fornham?

The Battle of Fornham was one of the biggest battles on English soil. It marked the turning point in Henry II putting down the Great Revolt (the greatest crisis of his reign). Unlike most medieval battles, the Battle of Fornham is unique as the exact location of where it took place and who was there is known, information that is usually lost. The Battle of Fornham has not been described in detail before. What happened can be reconstructed through exceptional finds of weapons and artefacts at the site; the details from monks’ chronicles; and the presence of an extraordinary cast of characters. These include Ranulf de Broc (the man behind the murder of Thomas Becket), Robert ‘Whitehands’ the Earl of Leicester (the most powerful of barons who had drawn his sword against Henry in front of the councils of England and France), his wife Petronella (an Amazonian figure dressed in full armour), the Knights of the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, Knights Templars, and even the ‘incorruptible’ body and vengeful spirit of Saint Edmund himself!
